Larry Holden, intarsia woodworking

Larry and his wife, Nancy, retired to Haliburton's beautiful Lake Miskwabi in July of 2000. Having always enjoyed working with wood, but never having enough time as an elementary school principal, he began experimenting with different arts and crafts. He settled on the art of "intarsia", which Larry describes as, "stained glass but with wood". He uses many exotic woods form Africa and South America preferring to let the natural colour of the wood prevail and does not use any stains in his work. After cutting from a pattern, fitting, shaping and sanding, three coats of polyurethane are put on. Most of his work depicts animals that may be found in the Highlands of Haliburton. He has also branched out to creating small crafts as well, including bread/cheese boards, gumball machines, golf ball wine stoppers, cribbage boards and others. Larry looks forward to seeing everyone at the Tour de Forest this year.

Petra Abernethy, handmade glass beads & sterling silver jewellery

Every bead is individually created by Petra using separate rods of Italian, German or American glass for each colour. These rods are melted using a propane/oxygen torch and wound around a steel mandrel. Depending on the complexity of the design, some beads may take upwards of 90 minutes to make. The beads are properly kiln annealed for strength and integrity. Each pendant is a miniature piece of art. The sterling silver chain and wire work accent the beads perfectly and sets it apart from the ordinary. Petra's timeless pendants are meant to be worn, touched, admired and enjoyed... daily.

Figurative work has the ability to speak to time and place in a unique manner. With this in mind I have begun to look at and develop my work with some of the sensibilities of a "Visual Anthropologist". My paintings include present day artefacts .They are painted in acrylic, in large, loose, fast, strokes to reflect the materials, intensity and speed of present day life. As a visual story teller I work towards telling the stories of children, teens, and young adults in their "here and now" as they grow in 21st Century societies. I endeavour to create paintings that are open enough, both thematically and technically, to invite the viewer into the process. I work towards pieces that are technically loose and "emotionally three dimensional".

Stone House Pottery:

Sharon Lynch, colourful stoneware pottery

Born and raised in Toronto, Sharon then went on to live in western and northern Canada before settling in Haliburton County over twenty years ago. When she bought a Haliburton house once owned by a potter and saw the remnants of a studio left behind, she decided to give clay a try. It was love at first touch! Perhaps the sensual, tactile quality of the medium appealed to the child within. Or perhaps she was just a glutton for punishment as she struggled with mastering the potter's wheel and the vagaries of glazing. Becoming more comfortable with the technical aspects of working with clay, Sharon started to experiment with form and colour. The use of bright underglazes is especially distinctive allowing her to create pots that are both vibrant and whimsical. Her painting background gives added dimension to this aspect of her work. Currently Sharon works out of her home-based Stone Garden Studio in Haliburton Village and sells and exhibits through The Art Hive. She is a founding member of the Maple Lake Artisans Collective and her artwork is in private collections throughout Canada and the United States. She is also a free lance writer.

In her work, Susanne seeks to evoke the beauty of her natural surroundings -- the water, granite and leafy forests of this Canadian Shield region.
